Meet Honolulu Federal Credit Union

Honolulu Federal Credit Union (HOCU) is a member-owned, not-for-profit financial cooperative serving individuals, families, and businesses in Hawaii. Chartered on December 3, 1936, HOCU has nearly 90 years of experience helping members manage their finances through deposit accounts, lending solutions, home financing, financial education, and other personalized financial services. The credit union serves more than 19,000 members and reports more than $390 million in assets. HOCU operates five branch locations on Oahu and provides additional account access through digital banking and the nationwide CO-OP network. HOCU identifies itself as federally insured by the National Credit Union Administration (NCUA), an Equal Housing Lender, and operates under NMLS Number 477720.

Serving Hawaii Since 1936

HOCU began as a financial cooperative for U.S. Federal Employees working in Honolulu and was the fifth credit union established in what was then the Territory of Hawaii. Since that beginning, the organization has developed into a full-service credit union while maintaining its cooperative structure. Unlike a traditional bank owned by outside shareholders, HOCU is owned and operated for the benefit of its members. Its mission is to strengthen the community and support members’ financial well-being through education and affordable access to personalized financial solutions. That member-focused approach continues to guide how HOCU develops its banking services, lending products, educational resources, and digital capabilities. Members can also retain their HOCU membership if they change jobs or move away from Hawaii.

Areas of Financial Expertise

HOCU provides financial products, guidance, and member services across several areas of personal and business finance:

  • Personal checking, savings, certificates, youth accounts, and Individual Retirement Accounts
  • Auto loans, personal loans, credit cards, and debt-consolidation solutions
  • First mortgages, FHA and VA mortgages, home equity loans, and home equity lines of credit
  • Solar and photovoltaic financing
  • Business checking, savings, money market accounts, certificates, and related banking services
  • Financial planning, financial counseling, and educational seminars
  • Online banking, mobile banking, online account opening, and electronic transfers
  • Nationwide access through CO-OP shared branches and surcharge-free ATMs

A Mission Focused on Financial Well-Being

Financial education is an established part of HOCU’s approach to member service. The credit union states that its mission is to strengthen its community and improve member well-being by combining education with affordable, personalized financial solutions. Its 2024–2025 Annual Report notes increased participation in financial seminars and continued availability of financial counseling and personalized loan options. HOCU also expanded its digital capabilities by introducing external transfers and online account opening, giving members additional ways to manage their finances without eliminating access to branch-based assistance. These services reflect a broader focus on helping members make informed financial decisions while providing practical tools for saving, borrowing, homeownership, everyday banking, and long-term financial planning.

Experienced Leadership and Member Governance

HOCU is supported by an executive management team, Board of Directors, and Supervisory Committee. Current management listed by the credit union includes President and CEO Mark Munemitsu and Senior Vice President Ross Inouye, along with managers responsible for retail delivery, lending, operations, Bank Secrecy Act compliance, information technology, human resources, marketing, sales, and individual branch operations. HOCU’s board also brings experience from financial services, government, technology, human resources, taxation, business banking, commercial real estate, and public service. Board members’ published backgrounds include graduate and undergraduate business education, decades of federal service, executive banking experience, and professional credentials including Senior Professional in Human Resources (SPHR) and Certified Payroll Professional (CPP) designations.

Financial Strength and Accountability

HOCU publishes annual reports that give members access to information about the credit union’s financial position, leadership, products, and activities. According to its 2024–2025 Annual Report, HOCU ended 2024 with approximately $393.1 million in total assets. During the year, total loans increased by 3.1%, total shares grew by 1.2%, and total assets rose by 2.1%. The credit union paid approximately $5.4 million in dividends to members, while reporting approximately $3.9 million in net income and an 11.9% net-worth ratio. HOCU attributed its continued financial performance to the combined efforts of staff, management, volunteers, and members.

Accessible Banking Across Oahu and Nationwide

HOCU operates branches at the Airport, Ewa Beach, the Prince Kuhio Federal Building, Moiliili, and Tripler Army Medical Center locations. Members can supplement in-person service with online and mobile banking as well as access to more than 30,000 surcharge-free CO-OP network ATMs across Hawaii and nationwide. This combination of local branches, shared banking infrastructure, and digital tools allows HOCU to continue serving members whether they are banking close to home or managing their accounts from outside Hawaii.
